Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy appointed to Interim Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Equity
As Interim Senior Vice President, Subbaswamy will oversee the academic program approval and faculty tenure and promotion processes, assist with setting and implementing academic priorities, and convene campus academic officers to identify priorities and strategies. He will also assist in setting a long-term strategic vision for the system office academic and student affairs and equity area.
Public Health Promotion Center (PHPC) and nursing students to host a series of free blood pressure clinics
The blood pressure clinics started March 9 and go through the end of April, held at the Physical Plant in room 201. The clinics are free, no insurance is required, no appointments are needed, and results are confidential and not shared with anyone.
STEM summer program prepares for fourth year
The Massenberg Summer Institute, geared toward low-income, underrepresented students of color that might not otherwise have exposure to opportunities in STEM fields, welcomes students for the fourth year. Students can be nominated by their high school guidance counselor or teacher and is free of charge for those accepted.
Building Bridges showcase launches new campaign
As Building Bridges celebrates its sixth annual showcase, the initiative's Worker Artists Group is launching a Random Acts of Kindness Through Art campaign called "Random Acts of Kindness Through Art and Song."
UMass Athletics receives $2 million gift
Alums Dr. Jim ’77 and Ellen ’77 Hunt made the gift in order to support an indoor performance center for the cross country and track and field teams.
$1M gift from prominent alum establishes the Subbaswamy Innovation Fund

College of Engineering launches new center
The Paros Center for Atmospheric Research (PCAR) will focus on translating research into improved hazardous weather predictions, alert systems, and policies that will save lives.
College of Engineering creates new masters in manufacturing engineering
The new program is expected to help address a substantial skills gap by training the next generation of engineers to lead the digital transformation of manufacturing.
Outperforming Harvard
UMass Amherst has been found to have one of the lowest NOx levels in a recent investigation done by (ital)Reuters(ital). In 2009, UMass completed the construction of a $133 million gas-fired power plant to replace its old coal-fired facility. And, the campus is bout 90% below the national average of boilers and turbines powering the electric grid.
UMass researchers show expertise with high citation rates
Based on a list generated by the Web of Science database, a dozen UMass Amherst researchers have ranked in the top 1% of citations in their field.
A decade of Eureka!
Launched in 2013, Eureka! at UMass has been a partnership involving the university, Girls Inc., and local schools, community colleges, and internship sites in western Massachusetts. The five-year STEM-based summer program for rising eighth-grade girls is designed to provide them with experience in science, technology, engineering, and math.
