Highlights
- This June, the Alumni Association welcomed the Class of 1957 and Emeriti alumni for Reunion Weekend 2007. Over 400 alumni and friends took part in welcome celebrations, a luncheon at Hillside with former Chancellor and Mrs. Lombardi, school and college receptions, campus tours, and a remembrance ceremony.
- The Alumni Campus Abroad program provides educational forums and excursions to places of historical and cultural significance throughout the world. Destinations included Italy, China, Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Africa.
- Over 200 guests attended the Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony held in the Massachusetts State House in April. The 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients included Former Dean Thomas O’Brien, Jess Kane ’70, Carmel Valianti ’79, Fergus Clydesdale ’66 PhD, Arlindo Jorge ’50, and Tisato Kajiyama’69 PhD.
- Over 500 volunteers shared their time and expertise to coordinate alumni events across the nation, serve on boards and committees, speak at professional development workshops, and advocate for UMass Amherst. A Volunteer Appreciation Day was held in February to honor their work and commitment to UMass Amherst.
- Alumni Clubs across the nation brought over 3,000 alumni together to participate in club events this year.
- The Alumni Association’s Alumni Career Services program provided professional development guidance and networking opportunities for mid-career and young alumni. Accomplished alumni such as Robert M. Mahoney ’70, vice chairman of Citizens Bank; Melissa MacDonnell ’84, vice president corporate public affairs for Liberty Mutual; and Nick Nyan ’92, founder of Dynamic Logic, to name a few, shared their experiences and industry knowledge with fellow alumni.
- Over a million visitors went to UMassAlumni.com for news, member benefits, event listings and online registration. The Alumni Association’s web site and online community played a major role in delivering programs and services of value.
- Through our Online Community, alumni submitted class notes, set up email forwarding, updated their personal profile and contact information in the online Alumni Directory, and searched for friends or professional contacts.
- For the first time, the Alumni Association chartered a flight to bring alumni and fans to Chattanooga, Tennessee as UMass went up against Appalachian State in the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship game. Over 1,000 UMass supporters came to Chattanooga to rallied for their home team.
- Following the Minutemen’s stellar performance at the Football Championship game, a special tribute was coordinated at the University of Massachusetts Club in Boston. Players and coaching staff were on hand to receive congratulations from their loyal fans. John McCutcheon, UMass Amherst Athletic Director, turned to the Alumni Association and its members across the nation and offered his thanks for their continued support of the team and the UMass Amherst Marching Band. “There is a total team effort here and the support that you provide us is invaluable!”
