Career Tips: Know Your Network
As you begin your job search you are likely to get a wealth of information, and quite possibly your next job, from your network. Networking is a powerful tool; you just need to know how to use it!
Write down everyone you know. This includes family, neighbors, friends, and schoolmates. They all know someone and most will be happy to give you a reference.
Prepare your Pitch. Make sure you know what you are looking for and what you want to ask before you call or write.
Get Organized. Once you start collecting information, you’ll need to keep it in order. Create a spreadsheet to keep you on track.
Do your research. Take every opportunity to grow your network. Study your local Business Journal, newspapers, and on-line resources for movers and shakers and contact them.
Volunteer. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out about a new field and to meet people who have the same interests as you.
Find a Mentor. Find someone in your field of interest who can guide you through the process and help you make connections.
Develop a Virtual Network. The web is an amazing resource for your network. Websites like LinkedIn are focused just on network development.
Contact Your Alumni Association. You have an immediate connection with thousands of other people because of your alma mater. Please contact us at alumni@admin.umass.edu.
