Susan Montgomery (1993, MFA) presents her new body of work, Pope Joan: Omission, at the A.P.E. Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts, March 8 to March 29, 2013. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2013 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Montgomery’s work combines large-scale drawings, paintings and sculpture to tell a narrative from the story of the 9th century, female pope, Pope Joan.
Montgomery’s work has always focused on the presentation of women in history, culture and our communal memory. Her past topics included Marie Curie, The Radium Girls and various women from literature and fairy tales.
Montgomery’s Pope Joan: Omission continues with her work in mapping stories. Through her art she explores how stories are remembered and passed on, the way they become lost, hidden, changed through time and sometimes forgotten. Her art deals with the relationships between memory, written and oral histories, nostalgia, misinformation, cover ups and lies and how this complex web plays out socially, politically and emotionally through the stories that she focus on. These paintings, drawings and sculptures are partially told and are evolving narratives.
Montgomery’s website showcases her current and past work with photo galleries that explore her pieces in detail. Her work ranges from 5’ watercolors, drawings and paintings to life size delicate wire and paper sculptures. For more information her web site can be found at:

Dr. Mechthild E. Nagel '96 PHD
Mechthild Nagel is Professor and Chair of Philosophy & Affiliated Faculty of Africana Studies and Director of the Center for Ethics, Peace, and Social Justice at the State University of New York, College at Cortland, USA. Dr. Nagel is also a visiting professor at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, Germany and Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, Spain. She is author of eight books. Her most recent co-edited volume is Contesting Carceral Logic: Towards Abolitionist Futures (Routledge, 2022). She writes on ethics of play, critical justice studies, global feminist studies, and African philosophy. Dr. Nagel is founder and editor-in-chief of the online feminist journal Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women’s and Gender Studies.
Dr. Nagel has published a new book:
Ludic Ubuntu Ethics develops a positive peace vision, taking a bold look at African and Indigenous justice practices and proposes new relational justice models.
‘Ubuntu’ signifies shared humanity, presenting us a sociocentric perspective of life that is immensely helpful in rethinking the relation of offender and victim. In this book, Nagel introduces a new theoretical liberation model—ludic Ubuntu ethics—to showcase five different justice conceptions through a psychosocial lens, allowing for a contrasting analysis of negative Ubuntu (eg., through shaming and separation) towards positive Ubuntu (eg., mediation, healing circles, and practices that no longer rely on punishment). Providing a novel perspective on penal abolitionism, the volume draws on precolonial (pre-carceral) Indigenous justice perspectives and Black feminism, using discourse analysis and a constructivist approach to justice theory. Nagel also introduces readers to a post secular turn by taking seriously the spiritual dimensions of healing from harm and highlighting the community’s response.
Spanning disciplinary boundaries and aimed at readers seeking to understand how to move beyond reintegrative shaming and restorative justice theories, the volume will engage scholars of criminology, philosophy and law, and more specifically penal abolitionism, social ethics, peace studies, African studies, critical legal studies, and human rights. It will also be of great interest to practitioners and activists in restorative justice, mediation, social work, and performance studies.

About Lung Cancer in the US
• About 1 in 16 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime.
• More than 238,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year.
• About 60%-65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.
• Lung cancer causes more deaths than the next two deadliest cancers (colorectal and pancreatic) combined.
• Only 25% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will survive 5 years or more, but if it’s caught before it spreads, the chance of 5-year survival improves dramatically.

NEPM’s Elizabeth Román receives promotion
Quickly flourishing at NEPM, Román will take the lead on daily news reporting
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — New England Public Media’s Elizabeth Román has been promoted into the role of managing editor – daily and digital news. Although her title did not dramatically change, her responsibilities
have evolved and Román will now be taking the lead on delivering daily news programming on the radio, NEPM website and social media channels.
“As a lifelong Springfield resident and western Massachusetts native,” Román said, “I’m excited to continue working with our skilled news department to bring you even more stories that highlight the needs, concerns
and successes of the people living and working in this community.”
Among those needs, Román is continuing to focus on expanding the diversity of sources in news coverage and opportunities to create more Spanish-language news content. As the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who
migrated to Massachusetts more than 40 years ago, Román has intended throughout her career as a journalist to provide accurate representation of communities of color in western Massachusetts. She has felt empowered
to do this at NEPM and in this new role, with the addition of supervisory responsibilities, said she looks forward to sharing her expertise with other journalists.
Elizabeth is a graduate of Holyoke Community College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Prior to working at NEPM, she was a reporter at the Springfield Republican for almost two decades, edited El Pueblo
Latino, co-founded Colectivo de Medios Latinos, and appeared as a panelist on NEPM's “The Short List” and “Connecting Point”.
Román joined NEPM in 2022, and while she is a newer member of the team, colleagues say she has had a remarkable impact, delivering outstanding news programming to listeners.
"I can't believe it's been almost two years since Elizabeth joined the NEPM news team,” said Sam Hudzik, NEPM news director. “She is a joy to work with and brought with her a high level of regional knowledge, local connections and journalistic skill that's helped NEPM fulfill its role as an essential news source for western Mass. I'm so excited she's moving into this new position, where she can further put her stamp on stories in NEPM's newscasts and on our website."
A collection of Román’s reporting can be found on NEPM’s website.
